OperationREAD
“Literacy is not a luxury, it is a right and a responsibility. If our world is to meet the challenges of the twenty-first century we must harness the energy and creativity of all our citizens.”
— President Clinton on International Literacy Day, September 8, 1994
OperationREAD improves schools access to reading materials and encourages students to read outside of the school curriculum as a way of broadening student horizons. The program goes beyond traditional literacy programs that center around collecting, shipping and donating books by working with community partners to implement literacy programming that supports and enhances the learning experience.
Objectives:
- Improve schools' access to books
- Encourage students to read outside of the school curriculum in order to broaden student horizons
- Engage technology in improving literacy and the quality of literacy programming
“No skill is more crucial to the future of a child, or to a democratic and prosperous society, than literacy.”
